Ighil Elementary School Construction
This past December, our group of volunteers with United for Service (“UFS”), a non-profit organization, embarked on a cultural journey through Marrakech, Agadir, and the rural villages of southwestern Morocco. We took part in rural clinics, shadowed physicians, broke bread with local families and helped teach English to children in the village of Ighil. These experiences allowed us to gain tremendous insight into the challenges the locals face regarding access to basic health and education.

No Education for The Children of Ighil
Our team had the opportunity to trek through the long, rocky and dangerous ‘path’ that the children take every day to school. The children are not receiving a consistent education because the existing government-funded elementary schools are located far on the outskirts of the village and many times the teachers do not show up. Although the children are eager to go to school, due to the challenges of attending school, they are prone to dropping out entirely.
Where will the funds go?
The UFS team hopes to raise $3,000 to cover the cost of materials and labor for the construction of a classroom in the village and also support the teacher’s salary. Please support us to achieve this goal and allow us to make an impact on the children’s education in Ighil!

As a result of prior donor support, past United for Service teams have successfully raised funds and implemented an education endowment program in Ighil village to support an after school program, purchase school books and materials, and pay the monthly salary of a committed teacher. Now we need your support for the construction of the school!

Educate the Children of Ighil
It is a well-known fact that those who receive basic education are far more likely to succeed individually but also bring success in the lives of those around them. However, due to a lack of resources, children in Morocco are often deprived of such a right. The education disparity is greater in girls than in boys, since girls are often compelled to either take care of their household, get married, or participate in labor work such as extracting oil from argan. However, with proper and consistent education, a girl’s income has the possibility of increasing 10 to 20% for every year she stays in school (Girls’ Education – Plan International Canada).
A village like Ighil needs boys and girls who are able to find the leaders in themselves and pave the pathway for others to follow. Fundamentally, it is education that can provide the inspiration to these children if given the opportunity. Please help us reach our goal of $3,000 for the construction of the elementary school. Thank you for supporting our goal to enhance literacy and education for the children of Morocco.
US donations over $20 are tax-deductible and funds for education are considered sadqah jariya (continuous charity.)
